A derringer, a stiletto, and a pouch of spells and potions…

Thanks so much for inviting me to visit your blog and talk about Fire Within, my recent urban fantasy release! Arianna Calin, my witch heroine, came with me and has agreed to answer some questions about her job. She’s not big on this kind of appearance, so I agreed not to keep her long. 🙂

Shall we get started, Ari?

Q: Will you explain how you became a Guardian, and exactly what you do?

Ari: I was born with the birthmark of a crescent moon on my right ankle. Fate had selected me to be a Guardian, and I was trained in martial arts, weaponry and magicks from the time I was a toddler. When I was sixteen, I was apprenticed to a practicing witch for four years and after that for two years to another Guardian. I’ve been the Guardian of the Olde Town district of Riverdale for thirteen months.

I’m an Otherworld cop, sworn to serve and protect, to keep the human and Otherworld races from harming one another. My bosses are the members of the Magic Council, our governing authority formed of leaders from six of the seven magical races. Demons, the seventh race, are not involved. I work with a human cop as my partner on joint cases.

Q: That sounds like a big job. How do you do it all?

Ari: Most of the time the Otherworlders are very cooperative. Since the McFarland treaties, last updated in the 1990s, humans and Otherworlders have lived in relative peace. If someone breaks the laws, I have many special skills due to my Guardian training and my witch heritage. One of the most effective is ability to shoot fire from my fingertips.

Q:  That sounds awesome!

Ari: It comes in handy. 🙂 Of course, I can’t use the lethal form of crimson fire except in defense. That’s why I also carry a derringer, a stiletto, and a pouch of spells and potions.

Q:  What can you tell us about the events in Fire Within? Did they really happen?

Ari: Oh, yeah. If anything the book can’t fully express just how edgy the community was during those few weeks.

Thanks, Ari, but let’s stop there before we give away spoilers. Fire Within (Guardian Witch #2) has been released less than two weeks, and we don’t want to ruin the surprises for anyone. I am eager to share this story, however, so here’s some carefully selected information, including a quick sneak peek inside the cover.

Book Blurb:

A hidden evil stalks the city…

Fire witch cop Ari Calin refuses to believe her human friend Eddie murdered a vampire—in spite of his confession. When a second vampire dies, Andreas, the sexy, charismatic vampire she dated and split from eight months ago, joins her in the hunt for the real killer.

But Riverdale may have a special kind of serial killer who’s looking for the next vampire victim. The roles of hunter and hunted become murky. And while unterHunAri might feel like killing Andreas at times, she doesn’t want anyone else to do it…

 Excerpt:

(Ari is talking with Lilith, an old friend, who hasn’t seen her for several months. Ari has just told Lilith she is going to approach a potential witness at a dangerous vampire bar.)

“Can’t you take someone with you? Like Andreas?”

Ari tapped a finger on the desk. Lilith was prying for information. “No, I haven’t seen him in months,” she said curtly. She hoped Lilith got the point this was an unwelcome topic.

“Um, still like that, is it? Kind of hoped you’d worked it out, but I guess the rumors are true.”

Ari almost asked, what rumors, but caught herself in time. Lilith never had been shy about saying what was on her mind, no matter how intrusive, and she was waiting for Ari to encourage the personal conversation. When she didn’t, Lilith let it drop. Of course, Ari would now continue to wonder what Lilith had heard. After all, there wasn’t much to know. Their split had been a very public affair. She had ordered Andreas to stay away from her in front of several witnesses.
