Review: Spell Bound by Stephanie Julian shines

Review: Spell Bound by Stephanie Julian

This set contains a lot of books, some by authors I’ve read before. I chose to review one by an author I haven’t read before, and I wasn’t disappointed. This book drew on the history of the Etruscans and built a fully realized world. The heroine, Shea, is on the run with her young brother after their parents are murdered. Both have magic and are learning just what they can do. They turn to the hero, Gabriel, for protection and help. He’s a flawed hero with wounds of his own. The growing relationship between Gabriel and Shea is well-paced for the most part. There were only a few moments where I had that “come on already” moment (which I have in almost every book–a little bit is part of the fun and it’s a fine line for authors to walk).

The secondary love story was also well done. I really want to check out more by this author. I give this five cat kisses. I hope the rest of the books in this bundle are just as good!

Opal Carew

Hi. I’m Opal Carew, a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. I write erotic romance for St. Martin’s Press and Samhain Publishing, and I self-publish stories. I also write romance as Amber Carew.

So why do I like writing erotic romance? I like being able to push beyond traditional boundaries. I like dealing with a female character who is growing and evolving – questioning her sexual boundaries and pushing past them. My stories usually include menage a trois. It is great fun to write a heroine choosing between two equally appealing heroes… or more.<

These aren’t women who just jump into bed with anyone. They find themselves in an unusual situation – something exciting and erotic – but a situation where they have to push themselves beyond their comfort level. As a result, they grow as a person. So often fear holds us back – of what others will think of us, of what we will think about ourselves – and we don’t follow our hearts. These women push past that fear.

Terry Spear

USA TODAY bestselling, and award-winning author and creator of award-winning teddy bears who have found homes all over the world including Australia, Switzerland, China, and Russia, and a retired officer of the US Army Reserves, I love to plant trees and flowers and if I could, I’d turn all the deserts green. Time travels are my favorite read, although I love to read most anything, and the Bourne series, Romancing the Stone, Sixth Sense, Legend, The Princess Bride, Stardust, Inkheart, LOTR, and tons of other movies are my favorites.
I love to research, to make urban fantasy worlds real, to bring a little of the paranormal into our world. Even in “Winning the Highlander’s Heart” the heroine feels she is cursed and she has second sight. But I try to do it in a way that feels real, and not fantasized. 🙂 Currently, I’m working on book 2 of the new jaguar shifter series, but still am working on wolf book number 12 and 13! So more hunky wolves to come! A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing has just released.

Review: The Naughty 9 box set serves up suspense

Because these are all full-length books (what a deal, right?), I have not completed reviews of all the novels. Because I do love Paranormal Romances, I started with A Girl, a Guy and a Ghost. I also reviewed the next two books after this one in the set.

Review: A Girl, a Guy and a Ghost:

Giselle is a ghost hunter for a paranormal magazine. Problem is, she fudged her resume to get the job and has no special talents in locating ghosts. She heads to Savannah, billed as the most haunted city in the world and, conveniently, home to her best friend. In her quest she meets a whole cast of characters, most of whom provide comic relief, including a wizened wizard who likes to be nude to an artiste that is a riff on Pepe Le Pew.

There’s also PI Ry Leland. He denies he has psychic powers to communicate with ghosts, but fate keeps throwing him and Giselle together. Their hormones do a bit of throwing too.

This book had a lot of humor that at times had me laughing out loud. Giselle has an often funny interior monologue. As the book went on, I sometimes got tired of all her asides, but mostly it was amusing. The book dragged for me in parts, and I think this is mostly because the interior monologue got so much play that it made me start to skim.

Giselle was a bit of a challenging character for me to like at times, as she had a propensity for making unwise choices. More than once I wanted to slap her upside the head, figuratively. Ry seemed to feel the same way but he still fell in love with her. Maybe because he wasn’t always the best decision maker either. Their ability to find humor in even dangerous situations keeps them going and keeps the story light.

Overall I found this book entertaining. It wasn’t predictable, even if it was far-fetched at times in the name comedy. I’d give it four cat kisses.

Review: Deathblow

I really enjoyed this story of a woman trying to get out of an abusive relationship and the cop who is protecting her. The action kept me reading ,and a lot of threads are drawn together in a way that I didn’t completely guess, although I had a decent idea of how things were going to play out.

The characters were well drawn and likable, except for the villains, of course. The hero and heroine both make assumptions about the other that prove to be untrue and helps build the tension between them as they peel away their defenses with each other. Due the complexity of the plot, I hesitate to say much more for fear of spoiling some of the twists and turns.

Romantic suspense is not my favorite subgenre, but I would highly recommend this book to both those who love the subgenre and those who want to put something different on their reading list. I give it 5 cat kisses.

Review: One Night to Kill

Just back from a special ops mission and looking forward to some R&R, Max has no desire for a special assignment guarding his commanding officer’s daughter Willow. Willow isn’t any happier about the arrangement. There is instant attraction between the two but both have reasons to keep their hands to themselves.

This novel read quickly and had some nice touches, such as Willow’s occupation and Max’s assumptions about Willow. The tension and chemistry between them is satisfying as the story progresses. The villain wasn’t obvious, although the way the climax played out made me wonder a bit if Willow’s father would’ve acted that rashly given all the precautions he took to set up protection details.

I must admit I’m a tad tired of military heroes with PTSD who are magically healed by sleeping with the heroine. If it were that easy to get over PTSD, the VA would need to spend a lot less money on mental health.

Despite some points that didn’t appeal to me, I appreciate the quick writing style and sexy build up. I give this book three and a half cat kisses.
